Longer, Wider, Lower, But Most Imporant—More Fuel Efficient
The all-new 2019 Lexus ES arrives in showrooms in September. The seventh-generation model is longer, wider and slightly lower than its predecessor, and is surely the sportiest-looking ES ever. It’s also the most fuel-efficient, in hybrid form.
The familiar, huge spindle grill remains, but the rest of the front hugs it close, making it more harmonious. The faster roofline is lower than the Gen 6’s, but rear seat headroom is undiminished. There is more action on the sides and rear panel, as the sedate styling of the previous generation car is put to rest.
Inside, the all new interior offers a dash with a huge center screen that favors the driver, leaving the view forward smooth and uncomplicated for the front passenger. Finally, you can get Apple CarPlay with the ES, but still no Android Auto.
The 2019 Lexus ES shares the Toyota Camry and Avalon’s new global architecture, called the GA-K platform, and with it some mechanical upgrades that make it a more responsive performer. Thank the new rack-mounted electric power steering and multilink rear suspension for better handling on the road.
Power and Fuel Economy Come Standard in the Hybrid
You can still order the ES 350, with its 302-horsepower V6, but if you want the most fuel-efficient luxury vehicle that’s not a plug-in, the ES 300h is your choice. Its fuel economy numbers are up 10 percent from last year, to 43 city/45 highway/44 combined. Compare that to the V6’s 22 mpg city/33 highway/26 combined.
The updated fourth-generation Lexus Hybrid Drive System features a 2.5-liter Atkinson Cycle four-cylinder engine matched to a lighter, more compact and more power-dense electric motor. Total system horsepower is 215. Regenerative braking feeds the car’s battery to power the motor, as usual.
The price of the 2019 Lexus ES 300h starts at $43,310, or $44,335 with destination charge. As always, you can add plenty of options to customize your new ride to your exact specifications.
